School for 800 Ukrainian children to open in Tallinn
Estonia is making provisions for Ukrainian children in the first to sixth grades to continue their studies. Now a new school is to be opened in the capital Tallinn, for children in grades 7-11, that has capacity for 800 students
News ERR writes about this.
Prior to this the Tallinn Musical school, which would be unused soon, was planned to be a school for children from Ukraine. But Estonia’s Minister Liina Kersna said that the new school for Ukrainians will be located in the city centre, which will make it much more accessible.
The report says that at least 60% of all lessons will be in Estonian. School principal Olha Selishtsheva said that the teachers will look at children’s mother tongues, and then decide if the rest of the lessons will be in Russian or Ukrainian.
Applications will be accepted from June 1st, and the school year will start in September.
The report says that over 1600 children from Ukraine are currently residing in Tallinn, almost 500 of them are learning in Russian-speaking schools, the rest are in Estonian schools.
