U.S. senators launch probe into Trump’s suspension of sanctions against Russia

Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Coons have initiated an investigation into the Trump administration’s failure to impose new sanctions on Russia for over five months for its war in Ukraine

The Hill reported the information.

The senators stated: "Instead of taking clearly available steps to pressure the aggressors, President Trump is doing nothing and we will be investigating this missed opportunity to push for an end to this war."

Since the start of Donald Trump's second term in January, the U.S. has not imposed new sanctions on Russia and has sometimes even eased existing ones. For comparison, during Biden's presidency, over 6,200 sanctions have been imposed — more than 170 per month.

The Democrats believe that the Trump administration's inaction allows the Russian president to continue the war.

"Americans should be asking why a president who says he wants to end a major war is instead letting the aggressor run rampant," their statement says.

The senators also emphasized that alongside the suspension of aid to Ukraine, the administration has "blocked regular updates to sanctions and export controls," which, in their view, creates opportunities for other countries, including China, to support Russia’s defense industry.

In their appeal, the Democrats called for the immediate restoration of the sanctions regime, regular updates to the lists of individuals and companies linked to Russia, and coordination of these measures with European allies.

“The only way to secure a just and lasting peace is to demonstrate resolve alongside our G7 [Group of Seven] partners and show Putin that the costs will only increase so long as he continues his brutal assault on innocent Ukrainians,” the senators stressed.

  • Manipulative messages are circulating online claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump has supposedly fully lifted sanctions against Russian banks and companies, including the state-owned firm Rosoboronexport.
