Before the start of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg on October 20, she has stated that the adoption of the 19th sanctions package is expected this week.
She clarified that the decision will be made “unfortunately, not today,” but during the EU leaders’ meeting on Thursday.
Kallas also commented on diplomatic initiatives aimed at finding paths to peace. According to her, the EU has noted “President Trump’s efforts,” but Russia agrees to negotiations only under pressure.
She added that while such efforts were welcome, the EU did not see Russia genuinely seeking peace, as Russia only understood force and agreed to talks when compelled.
- Before the College of Commissioners meeting at the end of September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the new sanctions package would include strict restrictions on energy, financial services, and trade.
