G7 warns Russia of new sanctions if ceasefire deal fails
On Friday, March 14, the G7 countries issued a joint statement threatening Russia with new sanctions if it does not engage with Ukraine on a ceasefire
According to Reuters, the document emphasizes the importance of reliable "security arrangements" to achieve a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
"G7 members called for Russia to reciprocate by agreeing to a ceasefire on equal terms and implementing it fully," states the draft declaration of the G7, which includes the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States.
G7 representatives noted that the draft, approved by senior diplomats, still requires final approval from ministers.
"They stressed that any ceasefire must be upheld and emphasized the need for strong and reliable security arrangements to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend against any renewed acts of aggression," the G7 representatives stated.
- On March 13, G7 foreign ministers met in Canada to discuss U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Ukraine, and the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
