14th package of Russia sanctions should include Rosatom — Lithuania's Deputy Foreign Minister

According to Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Simonas Šatūnas, the European Union should already be preparing the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which will include restrictions on Russian nuclear energy, in particular, the state-owned Rosatom

He told journalists about this before the start of the EU's General Affairs Council.

Šatūnas stressed that the allies should optimise their efforts and continue to support Ukraine. According to him, the issue of Russia's war against Ukraine is a priority in the discussions.

"First of all, obviously, we are finalising the 13th package of sanctions against Russia. This is not enough. We must start talking about the 14th package of sanctions now. And we expect the European Council to discuss it," said the Lithuanian deputy foreign minister.

He added that it is also necessary to talk about sectoral sanctions.

"We need LNG (liquefied natural gas - ed.), aluminium, Rosatom, nuclear energy to be on the list. This is the only way we can impact the Russian economy," the diplomat stressed.

At the same time, Šatūnas commented on EU enlargement - the opening of the accession process for Ukraine and Moldova to the bloc. He stressed the need to convene an international intergovernmental conference and to receive a report from the European Commission on how Ukraine and Moldova are implementing the recommendations.
