Russia strikes Odesa port with ballistic missile, causing casualties. Ukraine calls it 'barbaric war crime'
On July 3, the invading Russian army launched a ballistic missile strike on the port infrastructure of Odesa. As a result of the attack, at least two people were killed, and among the wounded are two Syrian citizens
Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, said this, according to Ukrinform.
“A ballistic cluster missile struck the port infrastructure. Two people were killed, three were injured and are receiving medical assistance. The driver of a truck was killed, and the identity of the other victim is currently being established,” Kiper said.
Later, the Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksii Kuleba, clarified that the enemy’s Iskander missile hit the area of one of the berths of the Odesa seaport.
According to him, at that time, people were working on the berth, unloading metal from a foreign vessel flying the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe. Among the dead are a dockworker-mechanic and a truck driver.
“Six more people were injured. Among them are employees of one of the port operators and a driver. Two others are Syrian citizens, members of the crew of the civilian vessel. All necessary assistance is being provided to the injured,” Kuleba added.
Portal cranes, equipment, and warehouses were also damaged.
Ukraine's top diplomat calls the attack a barbaric war crime by Russia
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha wrote on social network X: "This is a barbaric war crime. Russia rejects all attempts to achieve a ceasefire and advance peace. Moscow only escalates terror and must face increased pressure—without delay."
According to him, such strikes are part of Russia’s deliberate campaign against Ukraine’s economy and agriculture, as well as against global food security and freedom of navigation.
The diplomat noted that Kyiv expects a strong international response, including increased pressure on Russia and strengthened defense support for Ukraine.
On the evening of June 27, the Russian army launched attack drones on Ukrainian territory. As a result of the attack, a high-rise building in Odesa was hit.
