Russia launches heavy missile attack on Kyiv

On the night of March 21, Russia launched a massive air attack on Ukraine. The missiles were fired in the direction of the western regions, and most of them turned toward Kyiv. Air defense was operating in the capital and the region

Russia launched another missile attack on Kyiv after a 44-day pause. It used Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers and ballistic missiles from Russian territory.

The air raid in the capital lasted almost 3 hours. After complicated maneuvers in neighboring areas, the missiles came at Kyiv simultaneously from different directions. The Air Defense Forces hit about three dozen enemy missiles, including ballistic ones, over Kyiv and in the vicinity of the capital.

As of 09:00 a.m, 13 people were wounded in a rocket attack in Kyiv: 6 in the Sviatoshynskyi district and 7 in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Four people were hospitalized. No one was killed.

Situation in the districts

As of 07:37 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration reported the following data on the consequences of the missile attack:

Podilskyi district. The debris fell on the territory of a non-residential building. There was a fire at a transformer substation, the fire was extinguished over an area of 200 square meters.

Information about debris falling on the roof of a residential building with subsequent ignition was not confirmed. A fire on the roof of a non-residential two-story building was also promptly extinguished.

Shevchenkivskyi district. A multi-storey residential building was damaged, windows were smashed by the blast wave, an apartment caught fire, and residents were evacuated from the building.

The fire was also extinguished in three cars in the area. The fragments of the downed rockets fell on the territory of residential buildings between a kindergarten and residential buildings. The blast wave damaged the glass in the windows of an apartment building, and a private house caught fire.

Sviatoshynskyi district. The information about the damage to the building of a preschool educational institution was not confirmed.

A multi-storey residential building was damaged in the area - the debris fell on the fourth floor of the nine-story building. The blast wave smashed the windows. A car fire was also extinguished.

All emergency services are working at the scene.

According to the State Emergency Service, more than 170 rescuers are dealing with the aftermath of the missile attack on Kyiv. Police and psychologists are also working at the scene.

Timeline of events

The threat was reported by the Ukrainian Air Force at about 1 a.m. 

About 9 Tu-95s took off from the Olenya airfield (Murmansk region). Around 3:00 a.m., the Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Tu-95s maneuvered near the launching borders, which could indicate a possible launch of cruise missiles. Almost immediately, air raid and missile alerts were issued in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Later, the danger was announced in all eastern and southern regions. At around 3:20, an air alert was announced in Kyiv and the central regions. At 3:43 a.m., the air alert was extended to the whole of Ukraine.

At around 4:00 a.m., monitoring channels reported the arrival of the first Russian missiles on Ukrainian territory in the Sumy region. At 4:09, the military reported that the missiles were in the Chernihiv region (presumably Kh-59), heading south. Also in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, heading southwest.

At around 4:30 a.m., the military reported that missiles flew across the Chernihiv, Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions in the direction of Rivne. There are several groups of missiles in the region moving westward.

The Ukrainian Air Force called on residents of Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi to take shelter immediately.

At around 5:00 a.m., the military emphasized the threat of ballistic missiles from the northeast.

Air defense was working in the Kyiv region

At 4:24 a.m., the Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported a missile attack and the work of air defense. The information was also confirmed by the Kyiv City Military Administration and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The explosions in the city were also reported by Suspilne TV correspondents.

At 4:59 a.m., Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aerial ballistic missiles were launched in the direction of Kyiv. At 5:05 a.m., there were repeated launches of Kinzhals in the direction of Kyiv.

At 5:03 a.m., the military reported that some missiles from the west turned in the direction of Kyiv.
