The president of Ukraine recalled the tragedy that took place in Mariupol: two years ago, invading Russian troops attacked the drama theater, where civilians were hiding from the bombing, with the inscription "CHILDREN" in front of it.

"The world must remember everything that Russia has done to Ukraine and Ukrainians, and every Russian murderer must be held accountable for what they have done. We will ensure their responsibility. Eternal memory to all those whose lives were taken by Russian terror," Zelenskyy emphasized.

  • On March 16, 2022, the Russians dropped a powerful bomb on the Mariupol Drama Theater, with 1,000 people hiding in it.
  • On March 23, 2022, it was reported that in Mariupol, Russians were destroying evidence of killing civilians in a shelter under the Drama Theater.
  • On May 20, 2022, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol said that the Russians had completed the rubble of the Mariupol Drama Theater, and it was now impossible to determine the number of dead.
  • On June 30, the international organization Amnesty International, which investigated the destruction of the Mariupol Drama Theater, concluded that the occupation forces deliberately dropped a bomb on the theater, knowing that hundreds of civilians were hiding there.
  • As of July 24, the Russian Federation was preparing an "investigation" into the events at the Mariupol Drama Theater. And the Center for Countering Disinformation reported that Russians were spreading fakes about an air strike on the drama theater in Mariupol, but British human rights activists refuted them.
  • Already on August 18, Petro Andriushchenko informed that the occupation army had begun to restore the drama theater they had destroyed and stolen a unique playground from the park.
  • The Russian occupation authorities decided to demolish the back and central parts of the drama theater in Mariupol, but the front part will be left "as the basis for reconstruction."
