According to Baza, Ionkin returned from war in Ukraine. On August 22, according to the stories of his relatives, he was wounded in a shelling when he was transporting ammunition. He was thrown out of the car and broke his leg. Ionkin was on sick leave, and in October he again went to the military unit to undergo a medical examination.
The Russian state RIA Novosti news agency reported that a brawl erupted in the cafe shortly before the fire.
