Russian Black Sea Fleet cannot feel safe even in Novorossiysk

After the explosions at oil terminal in Novorossiysk and due to vulnerability of its landing ships, Russian Black Sea Fleet can no longer feel safe even on the coast of Russian Federation.

British Ministry of Defense reports on Twitter.

British intelligence draws attention to the fact that on November 18, Russian and Ukrainian media reported an attack on oil terminal in the port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea coast of Russia. A large base of Black Sea Fleet of Russian Federation is located next to it.

Black Sea Fleet moved many of its submarine operations to Novorossiysk after Ukraine struck Sevastopol base in occupied Crimea in summer. Russian command, most likely, will be concerned about threats to flotilla of amphibious ships based in Novorossiysk. These vessels are relatively vulnerable, unescorted and have played more important role in supplying Russian forces in Ukraine since the damage to Crimean bridge in October.

British intelligence concluded that full details of this incident are still unknown. However, any demonstration by Ukraine of ability to threaten Novorossiysk is likely to become further strategic challenge for the Black Sea Fleet. It will also further undermine Russia's already reduced naval influence in the Black Sea.
