Zelenskyy urges EU leaders to increase pressure on Russia
President Zelenskyy stresses the importance of maintaining sanctions and pushing Russia towards peace during the European Council meeting
Zelenskyy shared this message on social media.
He emphasized that sanctions against Russia should remain in place until Russia begins withdrawing its troops from Ukrainian soil and fully compensates for the damage caused by its aggression.
"I urge you to continue fighting against schemes to evade sanctions and Russia's attempts to finance its military activities. The fact that diplomatic efforts continue does not mean that Russia should face less pressure. This is a crucial factor in reducing the chances of deception by Russia. We must keep pushing Russia towards peace," said the president.
Zelenskyy also called on the participants of the European Council meeting to continue supporting Ukraine. He specifically highlighted the need for support in air defense and military assistance.
"We need funds for artillery shells, and we would be very grateful for European support of at least 5 billion euros in the shortest possible time. Investments in weapons production are needed both in Ukraine and in your countries. Europe needs technological independence, including in weapons production. Everything necessary for the defense of the continent should be produced here, in Europe," the president noted.
He added that Ukraine has effective and modern technologies, including in the fields of drones and electronic warfare, which can benefit all of Europe and global partners.
"But its further development, constant modernization, and increased efficiency – together with your investments in our industry and joint production – are the foundation for a new basis of European security," Zelenskyy said.
- British Foreign Secretary David Lemming stated that his country, along with the European Union, is in talks to accelerate arms supplies to Ukraine ahead of a possible full ceasefire.
