Zelenskyy to call Biden to discuss Ukraine's NATO invitation
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to call U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss Ukraine's invitation to NATO
He shared this following a meeting with German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz in Kyiv, Ukrinform reported.
Zelenskyy noted that discussing NATO membership with Donald Trump is currently difficult since he is not the U.S. president and does not hold the legal authority of the office.
"I'm planning, by the way, to call President Biden soon, if he has the opportunity, to talk with me and specifically raise the issue of NATO membership. He is the current president of the United States, and much depends on his position. There's no sense discussing this with President Trump, as he is not in the White House at the moment, and it does not depend on him," he added.
At the same time, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the U.S. for the latest military aid package.
"We discussed that even if there is a pause before Ukraine joins NATO, even if we have an invitation but are not yet in NATO, what happens during that time? Who guarantees our security? And to be honest, we can consider and work on Emmanuel Macron's proposal. Remember, he suggested that some troops from one country or another could be stationed in certain areas of Ukraine to guarantee our security until Ukraine is in NATO. But we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will join the EU and when it will join NATO," emphasized the Ukrainian leader.
- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine does not insist on immediate NATO membership, taking into account the positions of certain member states.
