Why Macron can be leader of “European Resistance Movement” in U.S.
De Gaulle’s demand for gold over dollars in 1965 helped end the gold standard - Macron could, in theory, do the same today
Because the French have a tradition of bending the Americans over.
Charles de Gaulle once did this. In 1965, he decided that the French did not work just to keep their wealth in American paper. Because what are dollars? They are just green wrappers that the U.S. prints in unlimited quantities and exchanges for real resources. De Gaulle believed it was time to put an end to this and declared: France wants gold.
And under the Bretton Woods system, the United States was obliged to exchange dollars for gold at a fixed rate of 35 dollars per ounce.
"France began massively exchanging its dollars, taking gold out of Fort Knox by ship and returning it to French vaults. The Americans were nervous, but they couldn't do anything: they had made the rules themselves."
As a result, the United States had to abolish the gold standard in 1971, because if everyone started copying the French, American treasuries would have been emptied in a matter of years.
Is Macron capable of such a level of front? Theoretically, yes. In practice, it's hard to say. But if anyone in Europe can challenge the United States again, it is the French president. Because traditions are sacred.
