Ukrainian lawmaker Yehor Cherniev states that, in informal talks, the U.S. side has given indication that the White House is considering allowing Kyiv to use U.S. weapons against Russia

He wrote about this on Telegram.

“In informal conversations on the sidelines of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the Americans say that the process in the White House to allow us to use their weapons to strike at Russia has begun,” Cherniev wrote.

The lawmaker added that the problem now is that decisions in the White House are made by a team, but there is no general agreement.

“But there is pressure from all sides. There are chances, so we are not slowing down,” Cherniev emphasized.

Ukraine's use of U.S. weapons for strikes on Russian territory

Currently, Kyiv has restrictions on the use of weapons provided by the United States. Thus, Ukraine can only use the weapons within its territory and cannot use them to strike Russia.

  • On May 1, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže said that Ukraine has already received Western weapons from some partners with permission to strike at Russian territory.
  • The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe said that the United States should allow Ukraine to strike military targets in Russia's border regions.
  • Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said that the weapons the U.S. provides to Ukraine should be used within Ukrainian territory.
  • According to the WSJ, Ukraine has asked the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden to lift restrictions on the use of U.S. weapons against military targets in Russia.
  • On May 22, a group of congressmen from both parties called on U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to speed up the supply of weapons to Ukraine and allow it to use American weapons on Russian territory.
  • On May 23, reports said that the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is calling on President Joe Biden to lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of U.S. weapons.
  • On May 25, Anton Hofreiter, chairman of the Bundestag's Committee on European Affairs, spoke in favor of not preventing Ukraine from attacking Russian territory with Western weapons.
