What are Ukrainian F-16s using to bomb Russian targets?
A new photo of a Ukrainian F-16 sheds light on how Ukraine is deploying these fighters in combat
Defense Express writes about it.
Ukrainian F-16s aren’t just for air defense — they’re actively used on the front lines. Photos circulating online show these jets in action, including one revealing a combat loadout suited for ground strikes.
A recently surfaced image shows a Ukrainian F-16 armed with two BRU-61 holders, each carrying four GBU-39/B SDB bombs. Unlike Soviet-designed jets like the MiG-29, which require special adapters, the F-16 uses these precision-guided bombs without additional equipment.
The GBU-39/B SDB weighs 129 kg, with a 93 kg warhead. It uses satellite and inertial guidance for precision, and some versions also feature semi-active laser guidance. While this bomb was less effective in GLSDB systems, the situation on aircraft is much more positive.
The F-16’s full loadout includes:
- Two AIM-120 medium-range missiles on the wingtips
- Two AIM-9 short-range missiles on the outer pylons
- Eight GBU-39/B SDB bombs
- Two 370-gallon fuel tanks
- An AN/ALQ-131 electronic warfare container
The AN/ALQ-131, mounted under the fuselage, is made by Northrop Grumman. It detects enemy radar and jams them automatically, protecting against anti-aircraft systems and enemy radars.
This strategy aligns with predictions made in October 2023, which suggested that Ukrainian F-16 pilots would take on more complex missions as they gained combat experience and more jets became available.
