U.S.-Ukraine to sign minerals deal today, Trump says amid meeting Zelenskyy
President Zelenskyy sees the U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal as a key step forward, while Trump calls it a fair agreement with strong U.S. commitment
Reuters reported the information.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the agreed minerals deal and discussed further U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s defense. He also emphasized the pressing need for advanced air defense systems.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy showed Trump images of the ongoing war. "Even in the war there are rules. … These guys, they don’t have rules," Zelenskyy remarked, referring to Russian forces.
The Ukrainian leader also conveyed his hope that the U.S. and Ukraine could work together to counter Russia’s aggressive actions. “Together, we can stop him,” Zelenskyy said, referring to Vladimir Putin.
Trump, in turn, underscored the significance of the minerals deal, which focuses on the extraction of rare earth elements critical for U.S. technological and military advancements, including artificial intelligence and weapons systems. It is a big commitment from the United States, Trump said, describing the agreement as a "very fair deal."
This would be a very great agreement if we could get the war stopped, he added.
Trump added that the rare earths from the deal will be used for advancements in AI and military weapons, assuring Zelenskyy, "You won't go back to fighting."
