U.S. supports Ukraine's efforts to engage Russia in upcoming Peace Summit - State Department spokesman
U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Washington had discussed with Kyiv the possibility of inviting Moscow to participate in the second Peace Summit
European Pravda reported the information.
Miller stressed that the United States would support Ukraine if it decided to invite Russia to the Peace Summit. However, this decision should be made by Ukraine itself, as the United States is not a party to the war.
"It’s something that we discussed with them. … As their partner, as their backer, we will support them if that’s the path that they choose to take. We have always made that clear," he said.
At the same time, the State Department spokesman emphasized that Russia has not yet demonstrated its willingness for real diplomacy.
"That was clear at the beginning of this war when we were pursuing diplomacy and the Kremlin pulled the plug on diplomacy and invaded [Ukraine – ed.], and it remains – seems to remain true today," Miller explained.
According to him, the United States views Ukraine as a victim of aggression and Russia as an aggressor.
"It was Russia that launched this war, Russia that is occupying Ukraine, Russia that continues to launch assaults, Russia that could end it – the conflict – today by withdrawing back to their borders," he concluded.
- On July 11, it was reported that Ukraine is seeking to hold the second Global Peace Summit before the November 2024 presidential election in the United States. This time, it is likely to be held with the participation of Russia.
