U.S'. last-ditch diplomatic push for Ukraine: expert comments on WSJ report
Political expert and journalist Vadym Denysenko says the U.S. is making a final attempt at a diplomatic resolution to the war against Ukraine, but the proposals raised serious doubts about how realistic they are
He shared his opinions live on Espreso TV.
"As of now, the Americans are making a last push to settle things diplomatically. We still don’t fully know what exactly will be offered at the negotiating table, since all we have is the Wall Street Journal’s reporting. Based on that, it looks like there won’t be any real peace talks.
First, one of the proposals suggests Ukraine should recognize Crimea as Russian — Ukraine will never agree to that. Second, there’s talk about the U.S. supposedly taking control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and it's satellite city Enerhodar — Russia isn’t likely to go along with that either," Denysenko explained.
He also pointed out that right now, we’re only hearing what The Wall Street Journal reports, and The New York Post claims Trump is expected to unveil his peace plan within the next three days.
"Whether that’s true is unclear at this point, because the sources aren’t always reliable," Denysenko emphasized.
- On Friday, April 18, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled he may pull out of ceasefire efforts in Ukraine if there’s no quick progress in negotiations.
- The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. is waiting for Ukraine’s response to Trump’s peace plan. It includes recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, declaring the area around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant a neutral zone, and removing Ukraine from the list of potential NATO candidates.
- Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, stated that no one has the right to decide Crimea’s future without involving the Ukrainian state.
