Unrealistic demands from Russia must be met with severe consequences — Zelenskyy
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for stricter restrictions on Russia from Ukraine's partners if it keeps undermining peace talks
He said this while summarizing a phone call with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
“We informed each other about our contacts with partners and discussed details of yesterday’s conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. The key point is that diplomacy aimed at peace must be well-coordinated and focused on tangible outcomes,” Zelenskyy said.
According to him, it is clear that Russia is trying to buy time to continue the war and occupation. That’s why Ukraine is working with its partners to ensure pressure forces Russia to change its behavior.
“Sanctions matter, and I am grateful to everyone making them more biting for those responsible for this war. There is no doubt that the war must end at the negotiating table. The proposals on the table must be clear and realistic. Ukraine is ready for any negotiation format that delivers results. And if Russia continues to put forward unrealistic conditions and undermine progress, there must be tough consequences,” the Ukrainian leader emphasized.
He also added that more talks with Ukraine’s partners are planned for today.
- Earlier, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said that Russia and Ukraine could sign a memorandum after which an agreement would be signed to end the full-scale war. At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there is “no and cannot be a timeframe for preparing a memorandum of peace and ceasefire.”
