Ukraine to start reparations applications for Russian war crimes in 2025
Starting next year, the Diia app will allow Ukrainian people to apply for reparations for any crimes committed by Russian forces
The Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov informed this following a meeting with the team of the International Register of Losses for Ukraine.
“In 2025, we will launch all 45 categories of applications for compensation for damage caused by the Russian Federation. We are now strengthening the team and finalizing all legal and technical issues so that all categories of applications to the Register will be available in the first half of 2025,” he said.
According to the minister, the Diia will also include applications for reparations for those who were forced to leave their homes, suffered damage to their lives and health, had their cars destroyed, and suffered other types of damage.
In April, experts began collecting information about destroyed housing in the Register. According to the head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, most applications were received from Donetsk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions.
“This is an important mechanism, in fact, the basis for future reparations. The more applications, the clearer the world's understanding of the damage that Russia has done to Ukraine,” emphasized Fedorov.
The most common causes of damage for filing claims are hostilities in the frontline or near-frontline zone, artillery shelling, air attack, occupation of a settlement, and the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.
“If you or your relatives have suffered from Russia's actions, please submit applications to the International Register of Damages through the Diia portal. The world should know everything about the crimes of the terrorist country,” the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine emphasized.
- On July 25, Diia launched the International Register of Damage in The Hague. From now on, Ukrainians can file a claim for housing destroyed as a result of Russian aggression.
