Ukrainian Air Force destroys 39 missiles and 20 Shahed drones in massive Russian night attack
On Wednesday night, May 8, Russian invaders launched a coordinated assault on Ukraine using missiles and attack UAVs. Air defense forces successfully neutralized 59 out of 76 enemy air targets
This is according to Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk.
During the night, Russian forces employed a total of 55 missiles and 21 attack drones:
- 1 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile from the Tambov region of Russia
- 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles from occupied Crimea
- 4 Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea
- 45 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles from Tu-95 MS strategic aviation aircraft (launched from the Saratov Region of Russia and the Caspian Sea)
- 1 Iskander-K cruise missile launched from Crimea
- 2 Kh-59/Kh-69 guided air missiles from the occupied Zaporizhzhia region
- 21 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs launched from the Primorsky-Akhtarsk and Kursk regions of Russia
Ukrainian forces, including fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units, were engaged in repelling the enemy's air assault.
During the anti-aircraft battle, Ukrainian defenders destroyed 59 Russian air targets, including 33 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, 4 Kalibr missiles, 2 Kh-59/Kh-69 guided air missiles, and 20 Shahed drones.
The Air Force commander noted that May 8 is Ukraine's Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.
"We honor the fallen of that terrible war, as well as the Ukrainian heroes defending their homeland from Russian aggression today!" emphasized Oleschuk.
- The missile attack on Ukraine during the night of May 8 resulted in strikes on the Poltava, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, and Zaporizhzhia regions. One child and two adults sustained injuries.
