Strilets highlighted the severity of the situation. He pointed out that Ukraine has documented 4,200 instances of environmental crimes, including cases of ecocide such as the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam.
Strilets emphasized the detrimental impact of strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities, underscoring their negative consequences for infrastructure, livelihoods, and the environment alike.
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, the State Environmental Inspection has been operating round the clock, employing new methods to assess and document environmental damage.
"Our primary objective is to meticulously document each environmental crime and incorporate these findings into the overall assessment of damages, ensuring that the environmental aspect is factored into future reparations," Strilets stated.
He also mentioned that the newly established International Register of Damages includes an environmental component. While acknowledging that the current calculation of environmental damage is imperfect, Strilets assured that efforts are underway to refine the process continually.
