Ukraine outlines three key aspects of ceasefire with Russia, explains 30-day duration
During negotiations between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia, the discussion focused on a so-called full ceasefire with Russia, which would include three aspects
Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the President’s Office, revealed this in an interview with Ukrinform.
First and foremost, the discussions revolved around halting aerial attacks using any type of weaponry, including attack drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.
“In other words, the first aspect is a complete ceasefire in the air,” Zhovkva explained.
“The second important aspect is a ceasefire at sea. This means ensuring that existing transport routes continue to operate without disruption,” he added.
The official reminded that just the day before, Russian forces had launched an attack that demonstrated the continued risks to maritime navigation, particularly in the part of the Black Sea where Ukrainian and other international vessels operate.
Additionally, during the negotiations in Jeddah, both sides agreed to a ceasefire on land, including along the front line.
“This is a comprehensive ceasefire,” Zhovkva emphasized.
When asked why the ceasefire was set for 30 days, the official responded: “The reasoning behind this period is quite simple: within 30 days, it will be possible to assess whether Russia adheres to the ceasefire and does not violate it—if it even agrees to it and if the ceasefire actually takes effect. This is essentially a test period, during which all parties must demonstrate their commitment to the agreement.”
The deputy head also noted that Russia has repeatedly violated previous ceasefires, none of which lasted more than two weeks.
- On March 11, a meeting took place in Jeddah between the Ukrainian and American delegations. As a result, Kyiv agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, while the United States committed to resuming intelligence-sharing and security assistance.
