Ukraine expands "geography" of attacks on Russian targets: Key oil, gas facilities hit
On February 2-3, Ukraine struck Russian oil and gas facilities, including an oil refinery in Volgograd and an Astrakhan gas plant. Both were hit, causing fires and significant damage to key processing units
Defense Express reported the information.
On the night of February 2-3, 2025, Ukraine's Defense Forces launched another strike on Russian oil and gas facilities, expanding the "geography" of attacks.
The attacks targeted the Volgograd oil refinery Volgogradneftepererabotka, owned by Lukoil and previously hit by Ukrainian long-range drones, as well as a gas processing plant in the Astrakhan region, struck for the first time.
The strike’s success was due to mass drone deployment. Russia claimed to have "shot down" 70 Ukrainian drones but did not disclose the total launched. Despite this, both the Volgograd oil refinery and the Astrakhan gas plant were hit, with Russian officials attributing the damage to "fragments."
The Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery has a processing capacity of 14.5 million tons per year, making it one of Russia’s largest (ranked 5th-6th). This was its second attack in three days, following a strike on January 31. Local footage confirms the strike, and authorities report a fire at the site.
As for the Astrakhan gas processing plant owned by Gazprom, local authorities confirmed a fire and reported the evacuation of employees. Footage from the scene speaks for itself.
This plant is also one of the largest in Russia, processing around 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 3.5 million tons of gas condensate annually. Local channels report damage to the primary gas condensate processing unit.
