Trump may have left G7 early to avoid meeting with Zelenskyy
U.S. President Donald Trump may have avoided a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit for several reasons. In particular, Trump has no new ideas on resolving the war
This was stated by international journalist Rostyslav Khotyn on Espreso TV.
“Perhaps he left earlier because he did not want to attend the bilateral meeting that had been planned. Clearly, he left due to the Middle East—due to Iran and Israel—but maybe he didn’t want to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A 40-minute meeting had been scheduled, but it seems Trump currently has nothing to say, and he doesn’t want to hear what Zelenskyy keeps telling him,” Khotyn said.
In his opinion, Trump is now trying to maintain balance and appear as an impartial mediator in the Russia–Ukraine war.
“He doesn’t want it to look like he’s meeting with Zelenskyy but not with Putin. That would appear as an imbalance in American diplomacy in the conflict, as they see it.
Putin calls Trump, but they haven’t met yet. So Trump doesn’t want to create a perception of bias in favor of Ukraine. He didn’t want to give the impression that the U.S. is somehow taking sides with Ukraine.
And secondly, Zelenskyy would once again be telling him that Putin is deceiving him, playing him, shelling cities, and does not want peace. Trump has already heard those messages, and he has no new ideas for resolving the situation,” Khotyn concluded.
