Strike on Sumy is Russia's “most cynical” – First responders
Lieutenant Colonel Oleh Strilka, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service in Sumy region, called the April 13 attack on Sumy “the most cynical” to date
He shared the information on Espreso.
“This was the most cynical attack Sumy have witnessed,” said Lieutenant Colonel Oleh Strilka. “It happened on a major religious holiday. The street that was hit — used by public transport and civilian cars — is surrounded by churches. It was 10 a.m., people were walking to or from services, on foot or in vehicles. And there were two strikes: first a missile, and then another just 2–3 minutes later.”
Oleh Strilka noted that the missile strike caused immediate fires in both cars and municipal transport. The highest number of casualties, he said, occurred inside the transport.
“Ten vehicles, including public transport, caught fire at the same time. The highest number of fatalities occurred in the municipal transport — if I’m not mistaken, seven people. The damage was extensive, and as of now, 34 buildings are confirmed to have been affected by the attack. In the first minutes, our priority was to extinguish the fires in the vehicles and inspect all nearby premises,” he said.
- On the morning of Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, Russian troops launched missile strikes on the city center of Sumy. As a result of the attack, dozens of civilians, including children, were killed and wounded.
