March 13 attack on Sumy: two victims recovered from rubble, 12 people injured
On the night of March 13, the Russian Federation attacked Sumy with drones, resulting in a Shahed hitting an apartment building. This resulted in deaths and injuries
The Sumy Regional State Administration reports it.
"The Shahed UAVs targeted Sumy overnight, striking a multi-apartment residential building," states the message.
Emergency and rescue teams are at the scene, assessing the damage caused by the airstrike.
According to the Sumy administration, as of 7 a.m., 30 apartments sustained damage, with 15 completely destroyed.
Rescue efforts have led to the extraction of 10 individuals from the rubble, 8 of whom suffered injuries of varying severity. Casualty figures are still being confirmed.
Around 1:45 p.m., the State Emergency Service reported that they had unblocked a human body from the rubble. They also noted that there may still be people under the rubble.
“The deceased was about 40 years old,” Volodymyr Bitsak, deputy chairman of the Sumy District Council, told Espreso.
At 3:42 p.m., rescuers reported that the body of the second victim had been recovered.
Alyona Yatsyna, a journalist from Sumy, told Espreso TV what was happening at the scene of the tragedy as of 7:10 p.m.
"Today at 1:30 a.m., a Russian Shahed crashed into a five-story building in Sumy. It was an ordinary panel house and an entire section of the building had been destroyed. Official authorities have yet to release an estimated death toll, and there has been no official statement regarding casualties. However, it has been confirmed that at least two individuals were found deceased amid the rubble," she said.
She reported that efforts to clear the debris at the tragedy site were ongoing, alongside a persistent fire. Rescue teams were actively working in the area.
Ten individuals have been rescued, eight of whom sustained injuries. Three of these are currently hospitalized, facing moderate to serious conditions.
"I'll name the number of 15 apartments that no longer exist... Just an hour ago, we were right at the scene, and while there's been some improvement, it remains incredibly difficult to locate anyone or to definitively determine if someone was at home at the time. I think this is the reason, there are lists of people who are missing, but their number is not disclosed. The Shahed struck the third floor of the building, causing everything else to collapse like a house of cards," the journalist noted.
As of 10:00 p.m. on March 13, according to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the number of victims increased to 12.
"Rescue teams saved 10 residents from the building, with 5 being extricated from the debris. 12 people sustained injuries of varying severity," the statement said.
The dead are known to be two men.
