Ukraine’s defense forces have successfully destroyed a Russian freight train carrying fuel, an attack that has effectively paralyzed railway traffic in the occupied territories, Defense Express reported.

The strike took place on the line between Urozhaine and Tokmak. With no alternative routes available, rail connections to Crimea have been brought to a halt for an indefinite period.

According to activist Petro Andriushchenko, the train derailed after the initial explosion and was later finished off with additional strikes. Activist Serhiy Sternenko published footage from an FPV drone involved in the operation, while Ukraine’s 65th Mechanized Brigade’s drone unit “Ronins” released video showing drones hitting the moving train — likely what forced it to stop before being targeted again.

The site of the strike is less than 30 kilometers from the front line, well within the known range of modern attack drones. Photos and video confirm the train was destroyed, and fuel tankers sparked a massive fire that rendered the track unusable. Russian casualties remain unclear.

The rail line in this area is single-track and serves as a key link between Russia and occupied Crimea. Until the wreckage is cleared, the route cannot be used. Estimates suggest repairs could take at least a day — including firefighting and track work — though others say it may take several days.

While rail repairs are usually completed quickly, the destruction of fuel tankers has complicated the process. As a result, Russia’s logistics in the region have been seriously disrupted, forcing reliance on road transport or the Kerch Bridge.

  • Russia needs to additionally deploy at least 50,000 troops to achieve minimal objectives in the Zaporizhzhia direction, according to Valerii Riabykh, military expert and Defense Express development director.
