Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says Russia is hitting Ukraine with the 9M729 cruise missile, the very weapon whose secret development caused the U.S. to scrap the INF treaty in 2019

Reuters reported the information.

"Russia's use of the INF-banned 9M729 against Ukraine in the past months demonstrates (President Vladimir) Putin's disrespect to the United States and President Trump's diplomatic efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine," Sybiha said in written remarks.

According to another Ukrainian official, Russia has launched this missile at Ukrainian territory at least 23 times since August. Two instances were recorded as far back as 2022.

One of the most recent strikes, as reported by a military source, took place on October 5 — the missile flew over 1,200 kilometers and landed on Ukrainian territory. Debris from the missile, marked 9M729, was found in the village of Lapaivka.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington reported that the 9M729 missile can carry a nuclear or conventional warhead and has a range of up to 2,500 kilometers. It is this weapon that, according to the U.S., violated the treaty's restrictions, which prohibited ground-launched missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

  • On October 27, Russia tested the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile. The launch occurred from the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in Russia's Arkhangelsk region, in the Arctic Ocean.

  • On October 28, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced that tests of the Poseidon underwater vehicle had been conducted, calling them a "great success."
