This is stated in the document explaining the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.
The State Department said that Russians regularly violate the Chemical Weapons Convention.
“The use of such chemicals is not an isolated incident, and is probably driven by Russian forces’ desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield,” the statement says.
The US State Department imposes sanctions on the Russian Defense Ministry's Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops, the Research Institute of Applied Acoustics, and the 48th Central Research Institute of the Defense Ministry.
Four companies from Russia's chemical weapons program were also sanctioned.
- On May 1, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against nearly 200 individuals and entities that support Russia's military-industrial complex and help it evade restrictions.
