Russia launches Shahed drones and ballistic missiles at Ukraine: Casualties in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, air defense active in Kyiv

On the night of June 1, Russian occupying forces launched attack drones and ballistic missiles across Ukraine. Explosions were heard, including in the capital. Civilians were injured in Zaporizhzhia and the Kharkiv region following the drone strikes

Consequences of the attack on Zaporizhzhia

Around 05:00, the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration reported that Russia struck a critical infrastructure site in the city. The attack partially destroyed an administrative building and caused a fire.

Later, the head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, clarified that at least seven Shahed drones were used in the attack on Zaporizhzhia. One of them hit a private building, damaging the house.

Initial reports said an elderly woman was injured. She received medical help.

Later, the number of injured rose to three. A 46-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man also sought medical attention.

The victims declined hospitalization.

Massive shelling in Kharkiv region

That same night, Russian forces shelled the Izyum, Lozova, and Kupyansk districts, using 13 Geran-2 drones.

In Balakliya, a drone hit the ground next to a private house. A one-story multi-apartment house and a car were damaged.

In Lozova, a drone strike caused a fire on the roof of a workshop at an educational institution. A woman was injured and suffered an acute stress reaction. Windows were broken in a dormitory, a café, and an apartment building.

In the village of Velykyi Burluk, a drone hit set fire to the second floor of an administrative building. Windows of the Velykyi Burluk village council and a car were also damaged.

In Izyum, a warehouse caught fire after being hit by a Russian drone. In the village of Bunakove, a power line was damaged.

Ballistic and drone attack on Kyiv

Around 01:45, explosions were heard in Kyiv. Head of Kyiv city military administration Tymur Tkachenko said Russia was attacking the capital with ballistic missiles and attack drones.

More explosions followed at around 04:17 and again in the morning, at 06:30.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed air defense systems were active during the night.

By around 08:40, more explosions were heard in Kyiv, including in the Obolon district. Air defense was operating again.

Air defense in the Kyiv region

Overnight, Russian forces launched another large-scale attack on the Kyiv region, using drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Air defense systems were engaged and intercepted incoming targets.

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces shot down 15 Russian drones, with operations still ongoing.

There were no casualties. No critical infrastructure was hit.

However, 10 private houses in the Bila Tserkva district were damaged. Their windows were shattered, facades torn up, and roofs damaged.

Shelling of the Odesa region

During the night, Russian drones targeted the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district in the Odesa region.

According to the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, the strike damaged private homes and a recreation center building. A fire broke out but has since been put out by firefighters.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.
