Russia demonstrates its capabilities: British intelligence on Zircon hypersonic missile

Russia used its Zircon hypersonic missile system during the attack on Ukraine on February 7. In this way, Russia is trying to demonstrate its capabilities

The UK Ministry of Defenсe writes about this.

The intelligence agency cites a study conducted by the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise. It is noted that Russia used its Zircon hypersonic missile system on February 7.

The video of the wreckage shows fragments of the engine and control mechanisms with specific markings that, according to the report, are typical of a 3M22 Zircon missile.

According to intelligence, the absence of vessels known to carry missiles in the Black Sea raises questions about the launch method. Probably, the Russian K-300 ground-based coastal defense system has been adapted for this purpose. If its use is confirmed, intelligence sources say, it will pose a serious challenge to Ukraine's air defense because of its speed and maneuverability.

"It is likely that the Russians are testing a new operational weapon system in a live conflict environment to provide assurance and demonstrate capabilities," the intelligence added.

For reference. The 3M22 Zircon is an anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile that was adopted into service in January 2023. Russia claimed the following characteristics: range - 600-1500 km, speed up to Mach 8-9, warhead weight about 300-400 kg, length 8-10 m.
