Russia hits Kyiv with missiles and drones: air defense in action, damage in region
Early Sunday, August 18, Russian forces launched a barrage of drones and missiles at the Ukrainian capital. Air defense units successfully intercepted the Russian threats before they reached Kyiv. However, debris caused destruction in the surrounding region
The Kyiv city military administration confirmed the attack.
Reports indicate that around 05:00 a.m., Russian forces deployed ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv. This marks the third ballistic assault on the capital in August, each occurring with a precise six-day interval.
The administration highlighted that this strike closely mirrored the previous two. Preliminary data suggests Russian troops once again used North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles.
Despite the onslaught, Ukrainian air defense forces effectively thwarted the attack, preventing any strikes on Kyiv. Initial reports indicate that the missiles were neutralized on their approach to the capital.
Simultaneously, multiple attack drones attempted to breach Kyiv's defenses but were all destroyed well outside the city limits.
The administration confirmed that, as of now, there is no reported damage in Kyiv, nor have any casualties been reported.
Two hours later, around 07:00 a.m., Russian forces launched another wave of attacks, this time with cruise missiles, reportedly Iskander-K.
"After complex and extended maneuvers, the air defense successfully neutralized the Russian targets. As of now, Kyiv remains undamaged and casualty-free," stated Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration.
In the Kyiv region, the military administration reported that although Russian missiles targeted the area, no critical infrastructure or residential buildings were hit, and there were no casualties.
However, debris from downed targets caused destruction in one community, affecting three garden associations. Private homes sustained damage.
Current reports indicate two homes were destroyed and 16 others were damaged. Broken windows, damaged facades, and roofs were noted. Additionally, four cars, fences, and power lines were damaged by debris.
The State Emergency Service released photos showing the aftermath of the Russian strikes in the Kyiv region.
- Last night, August 17, Russia also launched drone attacks over Ukraine. Air defenses were active in the Kyiv region. By morning, a missile strike in Sumy injured at least two people.
