Russian drone, missile strikes on Ukraine cause dozens of casualties in Kharkiv

Hit to Kharkiv residential area

At 5:13 a.m., Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote that four missile strikes on the city had been recorded. 

“An enemy missile hit a densely populated area of Kharkiv. It hit a high-rise building. There may be people under the rubble,” Terekhov wrote and later added that five people were reported injured. Among them is a young child. 

At 5:45 a.m., the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that at least 20 people were injured in the attack. 

“The invaders struck a densely populated area of Kharkiv. According to preliminary data, 20 people were injured,” Syniehubov wrote. 

At 5:51 a.m., Terekhov added that he had received information about one person killed in his own apartment. Later he said that the number of victims had increased to 24.

According to preliminary information, Kharkiv was struck by ballistic missiles with cluster munitions. That is why the damage areas are very large, the mayor explained. As of 6:09 a.m., 26 people have been reported injured.

Also, 15 apartment buildings were preliminarily damaged. The survey of the affected area is ongoing. 

According to Oleh Syniehubov, the head of the Regional Military Administration, there are two children among the victims: 4 years old and 2 years old. The number of wounded increased to 28.

As of 6:46 a.m., Terekhov reported that the number of injured had increased to 40. More than 20 apartment buildings and more than 30 private yards were damaged.

At 7:10, Syniehubov informed that the number of victims in Kharkiv had increased to 51.

“As of this moment, 13 people have been hospitalized in city hospitals, including two children. 4 people are in serious condition,” Syniehubov wrote. 

According to the State Emergency Service, as of 8:09 a.m., 1 person was killed and at least 57 injured, including 5 children, as a result of the morning attack on a residential area and a civilian enterprise in Kharkiv.

More than 60 were injured in the morning shelling of Kharkiv, Terekhov said at 8:36.

Hit to industrial facility in Sumy

At 5:26 a.m., the acting mayor of Sumy, Artem Kobzar, reported that a UAV hit was recorded in the city. 

“All three Shaheds hit the same building. The building was damaged, the roof was destroyed. One person was preliminarily reported dead. One more person asked for medical help,” Kobzar wrote.  

Russian Federation strikes at Easter cakes workshop in Sumy, killing an entrepreneur. According to Mykhailo Melnyk, the head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, the enemy struck a confectionery shop in Sumy with a Shahed UAV around 5 am.

“Easter cakes production was damaged. An entrepreneur who came to buy the products was killed. An employee of the confectionery shop asked for medical help,” he wrote.

Explosions in Dnipropetrovsk region

The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, Serhiy Lysak, reported that explosions occurred in the Dnipro district in the morning.

A fitness center, a hotel and an office were damaged as a result of the missile attack in Dnipro itself. Dry grass caught fire in Pidhorodne. Private houses and greenhouses were damaged. In Novooleksandrivska community, property in an outbuilding was on fire. The fire was extinguished. No one was injured.

Attack on Mykolaiv region

Vitaliy Kim, head of Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, said that on April 17 at about 8:04 a.m. the Russians sent Shaheds at Mykolaiv. As a result of the hit and the blast wave, the windows of a private house were damaged. There were no casualties.

At 7:25 p.m., the aggressor attacked Mykolaiv with an attack drone, the type is being identified. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out in a warehouse on the territory of a manufacturing plant, which was extinguished by firefighters. There were no casualties.

The Russian attack on the city caused a large-scale fire, added mayor Senkevych. Civilian warehouses with household goods of a private enterprise were on fire.

Attack on Kyiv region

At night, the Russian aggressors attacked the Kyiv region using UAVs, the Kyiv City Military Administration informed. Air defense forces were working in the region. Russian targets were shot down. There were no casualties among the population. There were no hits to critical infrastructure.

A private house was damaged in Fastiv district as a result of the attack. A forest floor caught fire in Buchanskyi district. The fire has been extinguished. Operational services continue to work on identifying and eliminating the consequences of the Russian attack.

  • On the night of April 17, Russia attacked the territory of Ukraine with drones and missiles of various types. Air defense forces shot down 25 Russian targets.
