Russia fires 10 missiles at Kharkiv: injuring at least 44, including 7 children

On Sunday, September 1, the Russian army launched 10 missiles at Kharkiv, targeting civilian infrastructure. The attack resulted in 44 civilians being injured, including 7 children. Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy emphasized that the global community must mobilize all necessary forces to end this terror

Oleh Syniehubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported this information.

"There is damage to civilian infrastructure and casualties. The exact number is being clarified. There is still a threat of further attacks," he stated.

Later, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov clarified that one of the strikes hit a residential area.

"Several homes and a supermarket are on fire. There are casualties, including medical personnel," he added.

Syniehubov also reported that the damaged infrastructure from the air strikes includes a shopping center, a sports facility, and residential buildings.

He added that as of 1:41 p.m., six people had been wounded.

"As of 1:41 p.m., there are six injured, including a six-year-old child suffering from acute stress," he stated.

At 2:04 p.m., Syniehubov reported that the number of injured had increased to 13 people, including two medics, a doctor in serious condition.

Later, Terekhov reported 2 more wounded.

“Nine people were wounded in Saltiv district, and six in Nemyshlyansk district. A total of 15 at this moment,” he said.

At 2:15 p.m. Terekhov reported that the number of casualties in the Saltivskyi district increased to 22.

“There are 22 injured in the Saltivskyi district, two of them are in serious condition,” he wrote.

According to Syniehubov, the number of wounded is at least 25. Among the damages are a Nova Poshta office, shops, a sports complex, a shopping center, and cars. 

“The enemy targeted only civilian infrastructure. The liquidation of the consequences continues,” he added.

Later, Terekhov clarified that there were 2 children among the 22 injured in the Saltivskyi district.

“Three cars were on fire. The a attack amaged a gas pipeline structure. There is a fire. At the moment 30 people have been evacuated. All relevant services are working at the scene,” he said.

At 2:42 p.m. Syniehubov added that the number of victims increased to 29.

“The strikes hit 3 locations: Kharkiv Sports Palace, a shopping center in the Saltivskyi district, and near Hydropark in the Kyiv district,” he said.

According to Syniehubov, preliminary reports from law enforcement indicate that Iskander missiles were used in the strikes.

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor Oleksandr Filchakov reported that among the wounded are four children, two of whom are in serious condition.

As of 3:28 p.m., Syniehubov confirmed that the Russian attack had injured 41 people, including five children. 

An operation is ongoing to clear the rubble from the sports complex hit by one of the missiles.

“There may still be people trapped under the debris, so search and rescue efforts are continuing. One man, an electrician working there, was rescued from the rubble. At least six missiles were recorded near the sports complex, with some hitting the ground,” said the head of the military administration.

According to Terekhov, as of 5:38 p.m., the number of wounded increased to 44.

“As of now, we have information about 44 victims. Seven of them are children, the youngest of them is three months old,” he said.

President Zelenskyy's response

As of 3:18 p.m., Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that all necessary resources are being mobilized for the rescue efforts.

“All the forces of the world must be involved to stop this terror. It doesn’t require extraordinary measures, but the courage of leaders - the courage to provide Ukraine with everything it needs to defend itself,” he emphasized.

He added that Russia is once again terrorizing Kharkiv, targeting civilian infrastructure and attacking the city directly.

“On September 1, at about 1:00 p.m., the Russian military began attacking the city of Kharkiv. Over ten strikes were launched on civilian infrastructure,” the statement said.

A shopping center, residential buildings, a sports complex, civilian vehicles, a gas pipeline and other facilities were damaged.

About 40 people were injured, including two paramedics and five children. A three-year-old and a three-month-old suffered an acute stress reaction.

According to experts, six explosions occurred on the territory of the sports complex: three with S-300 missiles and three with Iskander-M missiles. Russia also struck the shopping center with Iskander-M missiles.

In addition to Kharkiv, two hits were recorded in the village of Eskhar, Chuhuiv district. No casualties were reported.

In Liubotyn, 2 men and a woman sustained shrapnel wounds as a result of the missile attack. Civilian and state-owned enterprises were damaged.

In Kupyansk, men aged 76 and 74 were wounded in an artillery shelling. Private households were also damaged.

Criminal proceedings have been opened over the violation of the laws and customs of war under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
