Ukrainian woman sues Russia over war-related damages
The Slavuta City District Court in the Khmelnytskyi region has ordered Russia to compensate a Ukrainian citizen with 500,000 hryvnias for the moral damages she endured as a result of the war against Ukraine
Espreso reported the information.
As noted in her lawsuit, the woman claimed that the war initiated by Russia and the "evident inaction" of Ukraine, which allowed for a "military conflict" with Russia, resulted in a violation of her right to peace. Consequently, she sought almost UAH 50 million (49,843,018) in compensation for property and non-pecuniary damage from the Russian Federation. Additionally, the woman requested to receive 1 hryvnia as compensation for moral damages from Ukraine.
The woman cited “mental suffering, stress, and fears for her safety as consequences of the war.” She also expressed “discomfort at the sight of destroyed buildings, leading to a partial loss of faith in the humanity of the invaders.”
Furthermore, she mentioned the psychological toll of her brother's death in the war, which has left her psychologically crushed and struggling to overcome apathy. The constant stress, premature aging, and sleep deprivation caused by nightly air-raid alert sirens were additional grievances.
The court partially granted the lawsuit, ordering the aggressor country to pay UAH 500,000 in compensation for moral damage. However, it found no evidence of illegal actions by Ukraine or property damage.
- Previously, another resident of the Khmelnytskyi region obtained a court ruling in his favor, awarding him UAH 200,000 in compensation from Russia for the moral damage he suffered due to disrupted sleep caused by air-raid alert sirens.
