Speaking to reporters, Sikorski said Putin should recognize that “he’s following in Brezhnev’s footsteps” — referring to the Soviet leader who presided over the era of stagnation.
“He once admitted that the Soviet Union collapsed because it spent too much on weapons. Now he’s doing the same thing,” Sikorski noted, as quoted by AFP via European Pravda.
The Polish minister also pointed out that Russia is waging a “very expensive war,” and that Moscow’s aggression has pushed Western nations to boost defense spending in response.
“Putin will have to squeeze out even more money for defense,” Sikorski said. “We hope the outcome for his regime will be the same as it was for the Soviet Union — only faster.”
