Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski: Putin is insincere and mocking Trump
Poland's Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, believes that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is insincere regarding peace talks with Ukraine and is mocking U.S. President Donald Trump
This statement was cited by PAP news agency.
According to Sikorski, May 15, will be a "test," as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed direct negotiations with Putin for that day.
"I believe that President Putin is not sincere, and that he is mocking the President of the United States, but the test will be on Thursday," he said.
The Polish foreign minister noted that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire and does not begin real negotiations, "then President Trump will have every reason to change his policy to one that will put pressure on the aggressor, not on the victim of aggression."
Regarding possible negotiations in Istanbul, Sikorski also added that what happens there, or doesn’t happen, will be felt in Washington.
"President Trump, while in office, did what leaders usually do: made a positive gesture and is now waiting for the other side’s response. He made several significant concessions to Russia and received nothing in return. This is Putin’s last chance to choose what the Americans have called the proposal," he said.
Officially, the Kremlin has not revealed the members of its negotiating delegation in Istanbul for the third consecutive day.
- U.S. President Donald Trump stated on May 14 that he doesn't know if Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin will attend the negotiations on the Russian-Ukrainian war.
- President Zelenskyy announced that he has a meeting scheduled with Turkish President Erdoğan in Ankara on Thursday, but if Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin agrees to come to Istanbul, both he and Erdoğan will fly to meet him.
