German Chancellor Merz to consult Washington on sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine — journalist
Deutsche Welle parliamentary correspondent Roman Honcharenko spoke about whether Germany will transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine and under what conditions
He discussed this on the project "The World and Us" with Yevhen Magda.
"I think yes (Germany will transfer the Taurus missiles to Ukraine – editor's note), but it will not happen quickly, as he (German Chancellor Friedrich Merz – editor's note) will carefully coordinate the position with Washington. First and foremost with Washington. Of course, also with his Social Democratic partners in the government, who are against it, fearing Russian threats, claiming that it would pull Germany into the war. Merz also says he does not want that. But nevertheless, the pressure on him is quite large," he noted.
The Deutsche Welle parliamentary correspondent believes that if the United States cuts aid to Ukraine or tells Europeans to handle this issue, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will make the decision to transfer the Taurus missiles.
However, according to Roman Honcharenko, the results of the negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia may also have an impact.
"If the United States cuts its aid or tells Europeans: 'You now have to give more,' this will increase pressure on Merz, and he will transfer them. And a lot will depend on the results of the negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia regarding ending the war. If these negotiations are successful, and the war is really frozen for some time – which, by the way, in Berlin, at least the people I talk to, believe less and less – then, of course, it’s possible that Taurus will not be given immediately. If not, then the chances of transferring these missiles increase," said the journalist.
- On April 14, future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he had always supported the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, provided this decision is coordinated with European partners.
At the end of the month, former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk wrote an open letter to future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urging him to immediately transfer 150 Taurus missiles to Ukraine. - On May 10, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in response to a question about the possible transfer of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, stated that this issue would be discussed within the Coalition of the Willing and in cooperation with the United States of America.
