Losses and results of Russian offensive in third week of April
The occupying Russian forces capture 39 km² of Ukrainian land, with losses of 7,740 soldiers, marking a continued trend of high casualty rates
Ukrainian military observer Oleksandr Kovalenko has analyzed the most recent Russian military losses in Ukraine.
In the third week of April 2025, the occupying Russian forces have captured +39 km² of Ukrainian territory. These rates remain among the lowest since the first quarter of 2024.
At the same time, Russian losses in the third week of April amounted to 7,740 personnel. This is lower than the losses of the first and second weeks, which was due to the "Easter truce." In this regard, the correction of losses will have a greater dependence on the performance of Russian forces during this period.
In other words, for every 1 km² of Ukrainian land in the third week of April, the Russian military lost 198 soldiers.
To remind, the ratio in the first week was 366 soldiers/1 km², and in the second week it was 259 soldiers/1 km². As we can see, the correction shows a sharp decline in the ratio. In total, over the 3 weeks of April, the ratio stands at 192 soldiers/1 km².
Meanwhile, the loss ratio continues to grow both in monthly and quarterly comparisons.
To recall, in 2024, the average loss ratio for Russian army, compared to the captured territories, was 129 soldiers per 1 km². In January 2025, this had risen to 148/1 km². In March, the Russian military loss ratio reached 304 soldiers/1 km².
Overall, as of today, since the beginning of 2025, Russia has captured 780 km² of Ukrainian territory, with losses amounting to 153,310 soldiers, or 196 soldiers/1 km², which is higher than the figures for 2024.
Nevertheless, even with monthly corrections, Russian losses may exceed not only January 2025's figure but, under certain circumstances, even March's.
The trend of increasing losses continues.
