Kremlin welcomes U.S. stance on Ukraine’s NATO membership rejection
Kremlin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the U.S. "rejection" of the idea of Ukraine joining NATO brings Moscow "satisfaction"
He made this statement during a briefing, The Guardian reports.
The Kremlin said that statements from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration regarding the "exclusion" of Ukraine's NATO membership prospects were met with "satisfaction" in Moscow.
“We have heard from Washington at various levels that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is excluded,” he said.
“Of course, this is something that causes our satisfaction and coincides with our position.”
Peskov also noted that Ukraine joining NATO would "pose a threat to the national interests of the Russian Federation" and called it one of the "root causes of this conflict," referring to Russia's unprovoked aggression against Ukraine.
On April 4, following a NATO ministerial meeting, Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the Alliance's decision regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership remains unchanged despite all political statements.
On the same day, Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, who was in Washington, claimed that the Trump administration understands Vladimir Putin's stance on the impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO.
