Russia prepares to change constitution, paving way for Putin to rule for life
Russian officials have begun preparing the population for another change to the constitution, which will likely further strengthen the powers of the illegitimate president, Vladimir Putin
The Center for Countering Disinformation reported the informaton.
As noted by Pyotr Tolstoy, Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma and member of Putin’s party, United Russia, the recent constitutional changes—which “reset” Putin’s previous four terms and allowed him to run in the 2024 election—are not final, as “a lot has changed” since the start of the so-called special military operation.
Tolstoy said the upcoming constitutional amendments will be “much more significant” than the previous ones.
It’s important to note that the 2024 Russian presidential election took place, among other places, in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, making the vote and the “elected” leader illegitimate.
“While the current Russian constitution allows Putin to run for a sixth presidential term in 2030 and grants him nearly unlimited power, it appears Putin plans to formalize even greater authority and the ability to rule for life,” the Center for Countering Disinformation stated.
- Russian leader Vladimir Putin believes he's in a strong position ahead of a scheduled phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on May 19.
