ISW reveals how much Russia has advanced in Ukraine this year

According to ISW estimates, Russian forces have seized 505 square kilometers of territory since the start of offensive operations in October 2023. However, from January 1 to March 28, 2024, they captured nearly 100 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.

“This marginal increase in the rate of Russian advance is not reflective of the threat of Russian operational success amid continued delays in US security assistance,” the statement said. 

It is noted that the shortage of weapons in Ukraine limits the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to conduct effective defensive operations. At the same time, this provides Russian forces with flexibility in conducting offensive operations.

Analysts speculate that the influx of sufficient and regular Western assistance in security matters and addressing issues related to Ukrainian armed forces would narrow these opportunities for Russian armed forces and would provide Ukraine with the ability to halt Russia's advancements in minor tactical gains.
