If foreign troops are deployed to Ukraine, Russia will likely strike directly or indirectly — professor

Professor of the Department of International Studies and Public Communications, Director of the Center for International Security and Euro-Atlantic Integration at Uzhhorod National University, Ihor Todorov, doubts that a foreign military contingent will appear in Ukraine

He shared this on Espreso TV.

“Frankly, I very much doubt (that a contingent of European troops will appear in Ukraine - ed.). Because we can anticipate Russia’s reaction to this. And the fact that Russia would theoretically, if such troops were to appear, attack them directly or through some indirect means, is beyond doubt. And this, undoubtedly, carries the risk of corresponding negative reactions within the societies of the countries that may send military personnel to Ukrainian territory. But in addition, in my opinion, all of this is just talk for now, and the main question is – why, what would they be doing there, on territory far from the front line or the line of demarcation in case of a ceasefire? To deter Russia so they don’t attack major Ukrainian cities at night with Shaheds? Well, this might actually provoke more attempts to discredit those European countries that agree to participate in such a mission, including through potential negative public reactions in those societies,” he said.

At the same time, Ihor Todorov considers it a positive development that such discussions are taking place, as they could lead to genuine allied relations between Ukraine and European countries.

“Therefore, personally, I believe that the fact such discussions are taking place is good – perhaps it’s a step toward the creation of real allied relationships between Ukraine and European countries. Because for now, we remain partners. And despite the enormous number of so-called security cooperation agreements signed last year – almost 30, if I’m not mistaken – they have no legal consequences. But actual legal consequences with mutual obligations – that is our desired future,” noted the professor.

  • On April 4, negotiations began in Kyiv between representatives of France, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine regarding the possible deployment of a military contingent.
  • At this meeting, President Zelenskyy also stated that the main points of Ukraine’s draft agreement on rare earth minerals with the U.S. would be presented to him by legal experts next week.
  • On April 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on the current status of the issue regarding a military contingent.
