How to make Russia end war: Ukraine's FM Sybiha reveals two strategies
Russia can be forced into a just peace only if the sanctions pressure is significantly increased and Ukraine's defense capabilities are strengthened
Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha said this at a briefing with his Lithuanian counterpart Kęstutis Budrys, on June 9, reports RBC-Ukraine.
According to Sybiha, sanctions against Russia must be deepened.
"There are still enough areas and industries where we can increase this sanctions pressure. It must become destructive for the Russian economy," the diplomat said.
According to him, lowering the price ceiling on Russian oil will be particularly painful. Ukraine insists on reducing this threshold to $30 per barrel.
The minister emphasized that Kyiv has conveyed this position to partners and hopes that relevant decisions will be made during the G7 summit in Canada. Among other levers of pressure, he named the freezing of Russian assets and further international isolation of the aggressor country.
Sybiha also emphasized that Russia's return to the world stage before achieving a just peace is unacceptable.
"And the second factor that can influence and put pressure on Russia is the strengthening of Ukraine, defense capabilities, strengthening our defense industry, strengthening our army, so that we have a deterrent package, so that the price for the Russian Federation increases every day of their further aggression," the diplomat added.
According to Sybiha, during the meeting in Istanbul on June 2, the Russian Federation put forward a set of old ultimatums in response to Ukraine's constructive proposals, which could bring a just peace closer.
