Former prime ministers urge Trump to strengthen transatlantic ties, support Ukraine
The letter calls for unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine, tougher sanctions on Russia, and stronger defense commitments from Western nations
On March 4, 2025, four European prime ministers issued an urgent appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for renewed commitment to transatlantic unity and unwavering support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
In their joint letter, the leaders warn that "America’s adversaries seek to dismantle this historically strong alliance," emphasizing that only bold and decisive leadership can preserve global peace and security.
The appeal—signed by Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Tony Abbott, Carl Bildt, and Taavi Rõivas—stresses the importance of maintaining strong ties between Washington and Kyiv. "We call upon you to restore high-level dialogue between Washington D.C. and Kyiv," the letter states, urging Trump to back proposals presented during a recent London Summit.
According to the appeal, Russia aims to win not through military force but through deception, and only a firm Western response—including stronger defense commitments, increased European contributions, and tougher sanctions—can lead to a just and lasting peace.
The leaders believe that with a united front, the West can force Moscow to seek a genuine and lasting peace. "You have the power to mix up their cards and help establish a lasting, just peace on terms set by the international community," they assert.
The letter underscores that Ukraine and Europe stand ready to work with the U.S., insisting that peace can only be achieved through strength and shared responsibility.
In closing, the signatories pledge Europe’s commitment to this cause, stating, "Ukraine and all of Europe will stand with you—because this is the path to just and lasting peace."
