Fico’s party claims Slovakia would have "reliable neighbor" if Russia occupied Kyiv
Erik Kaliňák, Vice President of Slovakia’s ruling Smer-SD party, has said that if the Russian army were to occupy Ukraine’s capital, Slovakia would "finally have a reliable neighbor"
This was reported by European Pravda, citing Aktuality.
Kaliňák stated that while he does not want Russian troops directly on Slovakia’s borders, he still considers Russians to be more reliable partners than Ukrainians.
When asked by a journalist what it would mean for Slovakia if Russian forces were in Kyiv, Kaliňák responded:
"I’ll be cynical and say that we would finally have a reliable neighbor. If you look at Slovak-Ukrainian relations and how many times we’ve had to step in to repair them after Ukraine created economic conflicts with Russia — and how many times they failed to help us — then from this perspective, the Russians are a more reliable partner for us."
The opposition party Progressive Slovakia condemned Kaliňák’s remarks, calling them an act of treason.
"Fico is distancing us from Europe, burning bridges with our allies, and handing us over to Putin and Trump. This is betrayal. He has no legitimacy for such actions, and this government must resign as soon as possible. The only solution is early elections," the party stated.
- Robert Fico stated that Russia had "serious security reasons" for its invasion and that Ukraine will never be part of NATO.
