The European Commission reported the information on June 11.
The Commission believes that due to ongoing Russian attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure, it's unsafe for people to return to Ukraine. Therefore, they believe temporary protection should continue for another year.
The Commission emphasized the need to continue protecting refugees from Ukraine. Currently, almost 4.2 million Ukrainians, including a third who are children, are under temporary protection in the EU.
The proposal now awaits approval from the EU Council.
- On June 10, Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed amendments to the law on assistance for Ukrainian refugees, extending their stay in the country.
