Ukraine’s 704th regiment has deployed the Sivalka VM8, a mobile thermobaric rocket system, raising questions about its effectiveness compared to Russia’s heavier TOS-1 Solntsepyok.

The Sivalka VM8, mounted on a modified Ford Ranger, features 16 guides for 80mm S-8TR thermobaric rockets. It can deploy, fire, and retreat within 3–5 minutes, with a range of up to 10 km and the ability to scorch a hectare of land in one salvo.

Skeptics argue that TOS-1 appears far more powerful. However, experts emphasize that Ukraine's development of the Sivalka stems from a need for additional firepower, not direct competition.

Reports suggest that since its first discussions in early 2023, the system has been effective in battle. Beyond raw firepower, it also serves as a psychological weapon. Russian sources mention fears of Ukrainian pickup-mounted MLRS striking unexpectedly from the rear — instilling uncertainty among troops.
