Crimea may become trap for Russia. Expert Lakiychuk's explanation
Pavlo Lakiychuk, head of security programs at the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI", Captain of the Ukrainian Navy Reserve, explained how the temporarily occupied peninsula might become a trap for Russia
He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"Crimea remained only a threat for a possible struggle against Ukraine, and ahead of 2014, it was said that if Russia invades Crimea, it will be the first stage of conquering Ukraine. But Crimea has a weakness, even two weaknesses - the isthmuses, this island is actually connected to the mainland by two necks - Chongar and Perekop, and if you put a stopper there, it becomes closed. On the other hand, they now have another transport crossing - the same Crimean Bridge and the Port of Crimea - Port of Caucasus ferry. If you cut off the logistics at the Kerch Strait, Crimea becomes a suitcase without a handle. It not only does not help in attacks on the mainland, but also burdens its owner," explains the first-rank captain of the Ukrainian Navy Reserve.
Lakiychuk stressed that the Russians have already realized this danger to them, and therefore are trying to build a railway right in the war zone in southern Ukraine.
"The Ukrainian military has chosen the best way — an operation to prepare the battle space, a "planning operation" (as the Armed Forces' partners call it) to isolate the Crimean peninsula. What will happen to the enemy garrison, the grouping in Crimea - I don't know and I don't care. As history shows, they have Chersonese, and I don't mean the ancient Greek city of Chersonese, but Cape Chersonese in Sevastopol, where those who flee Crimea usually gather. It's a different matter for those who have moved to Crimea. I would advise the invaders to use the Crimean bridge and return to their home in Vorkuta, so as not to be trapped," concluded the head of security programs at the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI".
